Vtech Kidizoom Plus
Perfect For Small Hands.
The Vtech Kidizoom Plus Digital camera has a digital zoom, built-in flash, colour screen, and games. You can pretty up your pictures with a variety of frames, stamps and effects. There’s also a voice recording function, that comes with a voice altering feature.
Perfect for small hands, the Vtech Kidizoom Plus also features a 1.8" color screen, and takes 4 AA batteries, which give a play time of roughly 30 minutes.
Starting Up.
First off, you'll need a Phillips head screwdriver to insert your AA batteries into the camera grips. Then, while your child figures out how to work the camera, you'll have time to set up the VTech Photo Editor on your computer.
This is pretty easy, using the installation wizard. Your computer needs Windows 2000 SP3+/XP or above, but even a Mac user can still use the camera in mass storage mode, as long as you have Mac OS X 10.0 or above.
What You Get With Your Vtech Kidizoom Plus Digital Camera
Between taking photos, shooting videos, and playing simple games on the screen, the Vtech Kidizoom Plus Digital Camera provides a lot of entertainment. The buttons and joystick on the rear of the camera allow your child to pick a mode and scroll through their shots.
Dark indoors? There's a built-in flash to take indoor pictures, and you can attach the camera to your television, using the supplied A/V cable, to view the photographs full size.
The photo editor interface is easy to use. More advanced artists may be disappointed with the photo editing software, but picture files from the Kidizoom can easily be edited in more advanced programs. Download Gimp for free here, and you'll have all the photo-editing software you'll ever need.
Vtech Kidizoom Plus Digital Camera
On the plus side:
Users report that the VTech Kidizoom Plus is durable, and the sound quality is okay. The camera is easy for kids to use, and not too heavy. Kids enjoy working out how to use it, and the extra features seem to be appreciated. The fact you can connect it to the TV to show your pictures is seen as a plus, as is the ability to upload to PC and work on them further with a graphics package, or just print them out.
On the minus side:
There's general consensus that the picture quality ain't great, especially if you insist on blowing the pictures up on the TV screen. Given that it's a kid's toy camera, perhaps this isn't such a big deal. But that's more than can be said for the battery usage, which, as you'll find with most compact digital cameras, is horrendous. There's also no recharge facility or mains usage, so the battery use might be an issue for some.
Verdict On Vtech:
The Vtech Kidizoom Plus Digital Camera is a great, sturdy first camera for the budding Annie Leibowitz in your family, but Vtech should deal with that battery thing. If your child is old enough, check out some of the adult compact digital cameras on offer. A good camera can be more than a childhood toy, and provide years of enjoyment.
